Liverpool City Region invites dementia groups to special  consultation on planning document

Liverpool City Region Combined Authority has been inviting  local  residents and organisations to join a conversation about the future of the City Region.
"The Metro Mayor and Combined Authority have set out the ambition to address health issues by encouraging healthy and active lifestyles ... and by being an advocate for mental health and dementia."
The Spatial Development Strategy is a statutory planning document which will outline how land is developed across the Liverpool City Region for the next 15 years (presentation downloadable here).
A discussion has now been set up specifically for dementia groups, or those with interest in and experience of dementia, and will focus on the following two aspects of the Strategy,

  1. Addressing health inequalities and creating a healthier City Region;
  2. Creating high quality buildings and places that allow our communities to flourish.

Participants should be City Region residents or representatives from organisations working with City Region residents (Halton, Knowsley, Liverpool, Sefton, St Helens and Wirral) and will receive £20 high street shopping vouchers

The event will be via Zoom - a link will be sent in advance with full joining instructions.

Stars support call for government dementia funding

Dame Judi Dench, Stephen Fry, Brian Cox and Dame Harriet Walter have called on the Government to fulfil its election promise to double investment in dementia research.

During the last election, the Conservatives pledged to increase public investment to £160 million in what the party described as the “largest boost to dementia research ever” in the UK. Alzheimer’s Research UK claims that a year on, there has been no further commitment or strategy outlined and no mention of it in the latest Spending Review.

The charity, supported by a host of celebrities, has now launched a petition to demand extra funding to “protect the future of dementia research” during the coronavirus pandemic.

Oscar winner Dame Judi said: “Having portrayed someone with Alzheimer’s in the film Iris and having seen the impact of dementia on people around me, I’m sadly all too aware of how painful, cruel and unforgiving this condition can be. Not only on the person affected, but their friends and family too, as dementia can turn the relationships we hold most dearly upside down."
"Sign Alzheimer’s Research UK’s petition today and tell this Government we cannot wait any longer” she said.
The petition is available at: alzres.uk/sign-our-petition.

Care home visiting pilot in Liverpool

A TESTING pilot launched in Liverpool on 3 December which will pave the way for relatives to get closer to their loved ones during indoor care home visits.

Staff at 11 homes in the city have been trained to give lateral flow tests (LFTs) as part of Liverpool’s wider community-testing pilot which will mean that protective screens are not necessary during visits.
The care home pilot, led by Liverpool City Council, will last for two weeks and it is then hoped that the testing process will be offered to all other care homes in the city.
Visiting slots must be pre-booked directly with care homes and a risk management plan will be in place for each resident. To keep residents as safe as possible one visitor wearing full PPE will be allowed for each visit and visits will be for 30 minutes (preceded by a waiting time of 30 minutes for a second LFT result) during daytime only.

The 11 homes in the pilot are: Abbeydale, Alt Park, Breckside Park, Cressington Court, Garden Lodge, Glenarie Manor, Greenacres, Oak Vale Gardens, Redcourt, Wavertree, and Granby Hub.
For homes not in the pilot programme, indoor visiting can take place following national guidance which is set out on the council’s website .                                                                                                     Source - Liverpool Express website.

Should someone with dementia be expected to wear a face-mask
in public to prevent Covid transmission ?

Picture
Due to coronavirus, many of us now wear face masks or coverings while out shopping or on public transport.

Some people with dementia may not like wearing a face covering, or understand why they should wear one.

Alzheimer's Society have produced advice on how to help and who may be exempt from wearing a mask. Read it here.
Study into Covid home care choices
