OUTPUTS AND OUTCOMES
The outputs delivered by the Week -
- A multi-agency cross-region programme of high quality dementia awareness and action events
- achieved through unique collaboration by the 6 Local Authorities and the Combined Authority at officer and elected member levels, coordinated by the LCR Dementia Advisory Group
.. together with dementia action networks, groups and organisations, plus public and private businesses and charities committed to dementia cause
delivering over 36 hours of scheduled online events. Participation numbers are not available but from recorded data it can be deduced there were in the region of 500 registered attendances across the week
plus multiple ongoing events throughout the week accessed and experienced by the public
topics covered included - dementia awareness and understanding (general and detailed) ; advice on legal, financial and rights issues ; focus features on Young Onset ; fitness and health ; music and singing ; comedy drama ; family carer experience ; dementia research ; LGBTQ+ ; Covid impacts ; partnership working ; support and advice services ; safeguarding ; reminiscence therapy
also supporting Alzheimer's Society's national "Cure The Care System" campaign
participants included people with dementia, family carers, service and support agencies, health and social care professionals, academics, policy makers and managers, trainers and advisors and the Metro Mayor
events promoted widely via dedicated original webpage, specific Facebook page and Twitter account
achieving coverage - including interviews and personal appearances - in local and regional print media, on TV and radio, internet radio, in social media and blogs
The outcomes cannot be precisely quantified but it seems certain that as a direct result -
- there has been an improvement of public awareness and understanding of dementia as a condition, the experience of living with dementia and the issues of caring for someone living with dementia
- improved public understanding will feed into better experiences for people with dementia, both in general social interactions and in more dementia-friendly services within the community and public sphere
people living with dementia have directly benefited from sessions delivered or will do so as a result of family carers becoming better aware of available services, in particular those people most recently diagnosed with dementia and less well informed regarding support details - family carers have benefited from advice, information and support through the sessions offered, enhancing their own wellbeing and their ability to care for loved ones living with dementia
providers of services and policy-makers will have gained learning and better understanding from hearing directly the contributions made by people with dementia and family carers to sessions
the direct input of people with dementia and family carers will contribute to shaping future services and public policies affecting them, including the promotion of dementia friendly communities
